Jarryd grew up in Auckland, but was introduced to hospitality at an early age in Mumbai, India by his father who worked in hotels for over 25 years. So there was no surprise when he chose the industry for himself.
Starting his career with the Hilton Auckland, Jarryd then moved to Queenstown to open the Hilton there. He has also worked in Melbourne, Australia for 2 years as part of the team of sommeliers at Shannon Bennett’s Vue de Monde. Having missed that renowned New Zealand charm, he moved back early in 2015 and is part of the wave of Kiwis heading back to New Zealand from Australia.
Jarryd’s ethos around dining is quite simple: ‘Relax, enjoy yourself and let the dining experience take care of everything else’. There is a saying that when a guest enters a dining room, they enter into a silent agreement with the restaurant, to suspend reality for the duration of the evening.
Jarryd has built on the fine work of past Clooney sommeliers and has catered the wine list to focus on the array of wine being made in New Zealand, while still paying homage to the great wines of the world. The range of wines by the glass are catered to match Des’ and Sam’s food, and as such, is constantly changing – The hope is to find your new favourite wine.
